Description

I used to get these little birds every winter on my feeders. Then the disappeared for a couple of years. Now they are coming everyday again. They seem to want to try every seed going not just the niger seed they are supposed to like. Maybe they are building up reserves ready to migrate to breeding grounds. I think they must be running low on natural foods as well at this stage of winter. They are very feisty and drive off sparrows that are a lot bigger!

This is a lovely bird but one which I don't get in my garden in Somerset.

I used to breed border Canaries from siskin stock birds I have never seen one of them in London, but that doesn't surprise me, we live in a virtual building site. Every day a bit of out precious green space falls victim to the avaricious developers, along side the government two of my pet hates. Wonderful image Kevin. Nice even light on this.

Beautiful bird! We used to see them rather often here in New Hampshire, but I can't remember the last time I have seen one. Such wonderful little birds!

You are very lucky. I have never seen them up here, so thankyou Kevin - I shall be looking out for them now. The most colourful birds in my garden at the moment are the hordes of chattering Goldfinches.....is it a Charm of Goldfinches? Niger gobblers all.
