Apo Le Cristal qui songe (titre original : (en) The Dreaming Jewels) est un roman de science-fiction de l'écrivain américain Theodore Sturgeon paru initialement en 1950 dans le magazine américain Fantastic Adventures. Theodore Sturgeon aborde ici le thème de la différence sous les aspects de la difformité physique et des conséquences possibles de capacités psychiques surhumaines, une thématique proche de celle qu'il développera dans son roman intitulé Les plus qu'humains. Plus généralement, la différence et ses conséquences sont toujours au cœur de ses œuvres. En situant son récit dans le monde du cirque forain, peuplé de monstruosités et d'anomalies de la nature - que les Américains appellent freaks -, Theodore Sturgeon travaille sur l'opposition violente d'archétypes littéraires très marqués et passablement monolithiques, aussi bien sur le plan physique que sur le plan psychologique. Ganneval est un dangereux misanthrope, Bluett un manipulateur parfaitement sadique, Zena une mère-protectrice prête au plus grand sacrifice, Kay une ingénue fragile et introvertie, etc. Une fois établie, cette caractérisation psychologique ne subit plus aucune altération au cours du récit et confère aux personnages un profil relativement figé. Cette absence d'évolution psychologique des personnages contribue à déplacer tout l'intérêt littéraire de l'œuvre vers le fonctionnement interne de cette micro-société particulière que la troupe de cirque représente. Crystal dream (original title: (en) The Dreaming Jewels) is a science fiction novel by the American writer Theodore Sturgeon originally published in 1950 in the magazine Fantastic Adventures. By Theodore Sturgeon addresses the topic of the difference in aspects of physical deformity and the possible consequences of superhuman psychic abilities, a theme close to that develop in his novel The more human. More generally, the difference and its consequences are still at the heart of his work. By placing his story in the world of circus showman, populated by monstrosities and freaks of nature - the Americans call freaks - Theodore Sturgeon works on literary archetypes violent opposition was very strong and quite monolithic, both the physical and the psychological. Ganneval is a dangerous misanthrope, Bluett perfectly sadistic manipulator, Zena-protective mother lends the greatest sacrifice, an ingenue Kay fragile and introverted, etc.. Once established, this psychological characterization no longer suffers no alteration in the story and gives the characters a relatively fixed profile. This lack of psychological development of characters helps move the interest of literary work to the inner workings of this particular micro-society that the circus is.

Je pense avoir lu ce bouquin quand j'étais ado, je ne me souviens pas de l'histoire mais le titre me rappelle bien quelque chose ! Une magnifique image pour illustrer ce thème, les couleurs et les formes font penser au soleil qui rencontrerait un autre astre ou planète ! Excellent !

Je connais bien ce roman. C'est un des premiers livres de science-fiction que j'ai lus quand j'étais ado et il se trouve que je l'ai relu il y a quelques mois. J'ai eu plus de mal avec "Les Plus qu'Humains"... En tout cas, je retrouve dans ton illustration ce que je visualisais pendant le "voyage" du héros au coeur de l'univers des cristaux. MAGIQUE!!
