Description
Faemike was the first to think it was a B52 and he is correct
on display at Edwards Air Force base California
NASA B-52, Tail Number 008, was an air launch carrier aircraft, 'mothership,' as well as a research aircraft platform that has been used on a variety of research projects. Affectingly known as 'Balls-8,' the 10th B-52 produced, was first flown on June 11, 1955, was the oldest B-52 in flying status and has been used on some of the most significant research projects in aerospace history.
The bomber arrived at Edwards AFB on June 8, 1959, after undergoing modifications at North American Aviation's Palmdale facility to allow it to carry the X-15 beneath its right wing. The modified bomber first was used to launch the X-15 on its fifth flight, Jan. 23, 1960.

Great capture Richard and interesting background info. Models A through D had the high tail and the tail gunner actually sat in the tail (probably not in this one, since it was used for a specific purpose). Later models had a lower tail and the tail gunners set up front. We had a D model crash in July 1967 in DaNang at night. It had hydraulic failure (meaning they had problems controlling the aircraft during approach). It touched down 4,000-ft down the runway. That left it with 5,000-ft and the three drag chutes just could do the job bringing it to a stop. It went over the perimeter road into the minefield at the south end of the runway. It caught fire. The only one that survived was the tail gunner (that sat in the tail) and the only thing that was left the next morning was the black-painted tail with red tail numbers. We had to go in the next day and check the wreckage. The D model had the same engines as the Deuce (F-102), J-57s. it was a sickening feeling. The B-52 came out of Utapao, Thailand. That month, (August) 1967, was not good at DaNang, besides the B-52 crash they had the big fire on the aircraft carrier 'Forestall' and the biggest rocket attack on any major U.S. military installation up to that date, when they blew up the bomb dump, and nearly an entire F-4 'Phantoms' suadron and cratered the runways. Luckily, the napalm had been moved to a new underground storage facility.

Closest I got was growing up 20 miles from Loring SAC Base in Maine US. We lived in Canada about 8 miles from the border but of course could see them airborne from a resonable distance. (At least I had the B part correct :>) ) Great info!!
