Description
This view is from the Zugspitze summit (2,962m) and shows the Sonnalpin Glacier Restaurant (elevation 2,600m) at the Zugspitzplatt Plateau. Also visible is the small chapel.
The Zugspitze is the highest peak in the Wetterstein Mountains.
There are three ways to access the summit.
One is the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, a metre gauge (1,000 mm) cogwheel train from Garmisch (elevation 705 m), via Grainau (elev. 751 m) and Eibsee (elev. 1008 m) to the Zugspitzplatt Plateau (elev. 2,588 m) for a total distance of 19.0 km. In the upper reaches this train travels through a 4,466 m long tunnel on the north face of the mountain.
To reach the summit a cable car operates between the Zugspitzplatt Plateau and the summit.
The second way is by Eibsee Cable Car from the Eibsee to the summit.
The third way is via the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car from Austria to the summit.
