Description

The joy of a coffee-house lies in the people making use of them. I found myself in The Perfect Cup, today, with Corey and with Kate. It was a pleasant day off, and we were in the mood for warmth and conversation, rather than chilly, Chicago-wind, and photos of architectural Armageddon. I’ve captured numerous examples of destruction and wreckage, and those will appear in my gallery later. I’m still a bit close to the chill of the day and I much prefer to post something warmer, something with a bit less dust in it. I can still smell it, after all, I don’t need to see it, despite my desire to capture it, digitally. As Corey, Kate, and I shared conversation, I fiddled with my camera: framing the coffee-house, framing the subjective movie a series of photographs might imply. I cannot say what this particular movie might involve, but I rather like the starring role of a lone coffee mug, incongruously placed. Whose is it? What does it contain? As for the guy on the left: just how delicious is his warm beverage? Is it what inspires his tongue to protrude from his mouth? Is he in the midst of a lip-smacking moment of caffeinated enjoyment? In terms of the guy in the middle: what’s his story? What’s he reading? Is he fragmented. Is some aspect of his consciousness zipping through the datasphere, interacting with other bit of human consciousness swimming around in those thick, energetic aethers? Perhaps. To whom is he speaking? Is it likely that he knows someone over there, and is wishing them a good night, or perhaps a hearty bon appetite? And what about the guy in striped shirt? It was cold on the day of this photo, does his naked scalp inform him of this? I am sure they all have their stories, or they share a story in common, but for now, this image is…well…a spark. A tableau. A question. I’ll attempt to answer it later, if the mood strikes. Or I might simply leave it. Some stories are best told when not told at all. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all having a great week.

one commonality is that they are THERE, NOW! Whatever else happens, this is the now you captured, even though they have moved on. Wonderful image and intriguing questions that some might want to seek the answer, while others will just let it ride

The single lone cup in the foreground attracts the eye and won't let you go. It is like it is demanding the answer to the question unasked.

Such keen observations. Such philosophical questions. Your work is almost always thought provoking. Perhaps some great cosmic power brought all of you together at that time and that place but, being mere mortals, you all missed it. Or maybe Fate is just a goof, a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing. I hope the coffee was good.

Ah yes, we've just finished our evening cup of decaf...warm, comfortable, soothing...kind of centers me and lets me enjoy a posting such as yours tonight. Well done and as always thought provoking.

I am glad you and your friends were talking. These three seem isolated, united only by the thread of what used to be a place of activity amid the noise of conversation. At least two cups are real.

A layered tableau indeed; many stories, all important to the principals involved. Great capture, Chip!

The two ceramic cups, one paper cup, one painted cup on the window ... just look at the way they interact, the compositional notes they share with us. Three physical cups, one implied. The same is true of the men. Three there, one implied. (That would be you, dear one.) :) Without knowing you, without knowing Corey and Kate were there, somebody still took the photograph. I like the balance of all that. Love the shot!

I totally agree, the quality of a coffee house, or an all American roadside diner can just as easily be measured by the people who choose to be there as the brew. In fact I will happily settle for less than stellar brew if it yields some fascinating snaps of Americana, or Eurocana or whatever. Here I have no need to be able to taste the brew; you have managed to enable me to appreciate the experience even as I sip on my American India Pale Ale in the comfort of my study.
