Description
Amethyst is a variety of quartz (pale violet to deep purple) often used in jewelry. It is the traditional birthstone for February. The name comes from the Ancient Greek which suggested the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. This amethyst geode, sometimes called an amethyst grotto, was not the normal hollow ball shape but more like a 4 foot (122cm) tall tower. About 18 inches (46cm) wide at the base and tapering to 3 inches (7.6cm) wide at the top. My camera was inside the geode and no flash. It must have contained 300 to 400 separate crystals. Best details along the top and bottom. Zoom works.
