Description

There's a path that starts outside the fence that marks the border of the airport in Medford, Oregon & continues for several miles. I didn't know about this path until a few months ago when a friend showed it to me. I have been back a few times since then & took a few photos that I thought might be worth sharing. I'm not sure what this structure used to be (a transit shelter of some kind?), but it's in pretty dilapidated shape now. The barrels have signs on them that read, in part, "ODOT Region 3 THIS DRUM CONTAINS INVESTIGATION DERIVED WASTE (IDW)". ODOT stands for the Oregon Department of Transportation. It seems strange to me that barrels containing what sounds like potentially toxic material would be left in a place that's easily accessible to the public. Not that there's much foot traffic, but I did meet a few people on my walks here... Please zoom

Your story makes me hope you didn’t get too close - the drums look like they are radioactive :) Very nice capture !

I know quite a few UrbEx people who'd be salivating over this photo! As for me, I'm salivating over this photo for a number of different reasons. It's amazingly presented: perfectly seen and captured and the details are stunning. I love the hyper-real levels of detail and saturation. This is quite brilliant! As for investigation derived waste...hmmm...I'm curious, now...not so much of the waste but of who might be evolving to live in it. I suspect there are some rather interesting bacterial colonies in there!

Great looking and very interesting photo! Hopefully the investigation derived waste will not make it into the local food supply. Do I see power plant cooling towers in the distance?

UVDan - That's not a cooling tower, it's the airport control tower.

Makes for a fascinating speculation. Maybe the last truck to be loaded from these platforms didn't have room for these last two... Your postwork continues to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

I did a little research on "investigation derived waste" and found out it CAN be, but isn't necessarily, toxic. It might simply be dirt that's been saturated with motor oil at some point. Don't eat it, but standing there won't kill you. I love the abandoned feeling this has ... sort of future-past stuff. Excellent image!
