Description

This archway is on the west side of the The Ranch House Chapel, Camp Pendleton. I was so fascinated with this old structure and the site in general that I spent more than an hour there, checking everything out and taken many pictures and dreaming about how it must have been in the old days, when this part of California was still part of Mexico. I just never expected to see something like this on a Marine base. This site is now on the National Register of Historic Places and it is being cared for by the Camp Pendleton Historical Society. Actor Anthony Quinn attended services at the chapel when he was on the base for the filming of the 1943 World War II movie 'Guadacanal Diary' and later donated antiques, including a replica of an 18th century chair from King Carlos III of Spain. I did not go inside the chapel, or even tried, since I was aware of the fact that I was on a military installation, and one doesn't take unnecessary chances. Great shot and text, Sig. It looks like a pleasant, cool spot in the summertime. You would have probably been fine going inside the chapel. The Marines wouldn't have shot you until you stepped away from the historic place. lol

)
