Description
For those of you who have favorited me because of my pin-ups, this image may come as a bit of a surprise, but I would like to try some different types of rendering. This is a World War 2 scene of US B-17 bombers ("Flying Fortresses") over Germany, receiving lots of anti-aircraft cannon fire or "Flak" (this term originally comes from the German acronym for"Fliegerabwehrkanone" - anti-aircraft cannon). "Flak Alley" was thus a place where the bombers were taking a heavy fire from the ground. There wasn't much for the crews to do but grit their teeth and keep on flying, because they couldn't break up their formation. The flak bursts are made from Jepe's "FlameZ" and "Fire 2", both available on Daz3D. I am new at this kind of rendering, so I will welcome comments, especially suggestions for improvements.

Hey, nice first go-round. My old man was a B-17 pilot and I am an aviation nut so this comes from someone who cares. You might try putting the light source above the planes and make sure the planes are both going in the same direction (They look a little off). You might also try for a black and white or siepia to give it a really authentic look. Keep on truckin'.

Not too bad an effort for a first go at a new genre... If I may add a couple of suggestions, I'd say that the smoke trail coming from the damaged engine should stream out over the wing... much like a jet contrail... to trail long behind the plane... with the fire mostly coming through the exhaust vents just forward of the wing and... The flak busts should be a bit more irregular in shape... mabye in some places with bits radiating out from them... small trails of smoke radiating out as peices of shrapnel burst away from the explosion... Just my 2 cents worth... Otherwise a very well done image :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I put the light from below because that gave the aircraft underbellies a lighter appearance in keeping with some of the camouflage patterns used on these aircraft (the model itself is all green). and my flak bursts and fire are all 2-dimensional props from Jepe, which will therefore need a lot of playing around with to get the desired effects. There is no postwork on this image, which is probably what is needed.

Or you could dig up the template for the B17 and change the fuselage / wing texture to give it a paler underside. It is coming along well.

With all that has been said... nice job. the underside lighting gives a passable rendition of neutral grey.. well done.
