Description

In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ… Founded in 1565 by the Spanish, Saint Augustine, Florida is the oldest European settlement on the United States mainland. It has a very old cemetery. Something about a child’s grave that always touches the heart. Wishing all those of faith a peaceful Easter.

So sad to see, and one cannot imagine life at a time when such tragedy was so much more common. Beautiful photo though.

An emotional piece. On one hand it makes you feel like, I wish I hadn't seen it because it's so sad. But on the other hand, I want to know the story behind it. I wish someone would fix the stone.

... and especially, when this child has only just lived 1 1/2 years ... so tragic and sad for the family! *** I'm also wishing you a peaceful and reflective Easter-weekend, Mark and thanks for all your support through out the year! BB

This is telling in so many ways and it's an unexpected echo to some of the "invisible mother" photographs I've seen from a bit later than the date shown here: photographs of children (one or two of whom might actually not have been alive when the photos were taken) posed in ornate, richly draped surroundings with vaguely (disturbing) human shapes hidden in the folds of drapery and fabric. Those were the invisible mothers, who were likely just photographer's assistants (women) who were employed to keep the living children from squirming around to much...as they weren't related to the children (according to one theory) they weren't to actually be shown IN the photographs, and so now we have these oddly creepy photographic artifacts. I thought of that in seeing this, as it reminds me of how far we've come from the days when infant mortality was just another bit of every day life. This is quite a tender photograph, highlighting the one thing we should never lose sight of: human frailty. This is wonderfully seen and presented.
