Description

In the last chapter, when I indicated that the I-25 loaded up the Glen and its crew it immediately went back to prowling for American shipping. There was one little event that occurred that I saved for this episode. Just about the time that the crew of the I-25 sub had completed loading the Glen on board, dismantling it, and stowing it in its watertight hanger they were spotted by a USAAF Lockheed A-29 Hudson bomber on maritime patrol. The patrol craft from the 42nd Bomb Squadron out of McChord Field in Tacoma, WA, was piloted by one Captain Jean H. Daugherty and crew when they spotted a dark shape in the water. Identifying it as a Japanese submarine, they began their bomb run as the sub, also alerted to the bomber's presence, began a crash dive beneath the surface. The Hudson was carrying two 300 pound detonation bombs with delayed fuses instead of depth charges, but the run only resulted in two very near misses. Both bombs would have done the trick and destroyed or severely damaged the fleeing enemy submarine but for one tiny detail. In the excitement of spotting the sub and realizing he had a chance to sink it, Captain Daugherty had forgotten to arm the two bombs. This had the effect, of course, of rendering them merely two 300 pound hunks of metal which only caused very slight damage to the enemy sub on impact near the target. Realizing the error, The pilot circled his aircraft to return and strafe the sub. The crewman positioned himself in the rear turret, and taking a bead on the submarine realized that there were no barrels in the machine gun...one lucky submarine commander, one very embarrassed bomber captain. The hapless Hudson was soon joined by a Coast Guard cutter and three additional aircraft, but the fortunate I-25 had made its escape. The crew of the sub were later able to repair the minor damage to their boat and make good their escape . The close call and increased attention didn't damped their enthusiasm to deliver the remainder of the bombs to the Oregon forest, but it did prompt a change of plans...no more daylight bomb runs. Interestingly, by one account, Captain Daugherty returned to base not knowing the result of his dropped bombs on the fleeing sub and only found out thirty years later of the results of his attack. I'm sure that thirty years later he could still hear the chewing out he most probably received on his return to McChord field. " Holy bent harpoon, that man! " I think somebody used up all nine lives that day..Understandable, though unfortunate oversight with the bombs, in the heat of the moment....lets face it, Daugherty wasn't the only one during the war. Missing gun barrels!! I'd be demanding a new crew chief..Brilliant chapter Bill and stunning image, particularly impressive 'wet work'....10/10++ Thanks for the mention, always appreciated..

Great action render. Gee, the "back blocks" of the Pacific Theatre needed a thorough re-work didn't it? No barrels??? At least Doolittle used broom handles!!!!
