Description

Venice, The Frari’s Basilica. Altar of the Crucifix. This altar, designed by Baldassarre Longhena (1598-1682), was erected in 1672 by Giusti Le Court (1627-1679). It was built using Istrian stone, Belgium black marble and other coloured marbles. It has two precious black jasper marble columns beneath the frontispiece, adorned with angels bearing a compassionate expression and holding the instruments of Passion. Next to the altar there is a wooden statue which represents OUR LADY OF SORROWS (1700).
