Description
Known since ancient times, the area by the thermal water springs of Lagole represents an important archaeological site in the province of Belluno, Veneto. Near these healing waters many Venetic artefacts (2500 B.C.) have been found in addition to some Roman findings ( such as small bronze statues, inscriptions, etc.). This water spring was associated with a healing deity that during Roman times was identified as Apollo. The sanctuary was probably connected with other Venetic centers of the Padana plain. The findings of Lagole are now kept in the Museum of the Magnificent Community in Pieve di Cadore (the official name of the town).
This is the first of a series about this terrific area, an open sanctuary with no traces of buildings, where a mysterious deity was worshipped, Here you can see the brook, with its yellowish-reddish water, on a mountain slope.
Thanks for your kind comments.

egads...I've been in your gallery now for 2 and a half hours, and I have to stop, though I don't want to. I'll try to come back before I leave RR again, but I've tried to get at least a representation of all you've posted since I last commented. I chose this because once again your image and postwork evoke the magic of the place you present. This is a photo-painting in a way---I don't mean literally, as in using 'paint filters'; but figuratively, as in making a photograph feel like a painting, something that was even done in darkrooms, before paint filters existed. The trees and bushes and greenery are soft, they all slope down the shot along with the water. You have everything awash in whites---where the sky harmonizes with the water, and the whites feel 'pure', fitting for the powers attributed to these waters. And you have streaks of yellow and green, moving on the same diagonals, down the shot. The overall feel is of a magical place, a dream of a place, though it's very much still a photograph. This whole series is magical, and I'm sorry I have to stop now for that reason. I won't be commenting on the Motta Buffetto Mound shots either...but in addition to stopping with a magical image, I'm also stopping on healing waters---not a bad way to stop either. Always a pleasure Sandra, always a great journey each time I come here. I've made the journey with many other of your images as well; but when I comment, I can give back some of the excitement I get from those images. Wonderful place, this gallery. I hope to be back before too much more time passes...
