Description
"Very true!" Farnese exclaimed. "I still wonder how my predecessor made you resign!"
"He didn't understand that a contract is a contract, and must be honoured, always." JS slammed a 32-teeth smile on 3TC's face.
An orderly announced dinner was ready.
Ignoring Eve and the others' great amusement, JS had spent half a day to place his guests at the tables, displaying real protocol acrobatics. At the end, a smug JS had shown them the seats map explaining its subtle alchemy.
"I could never have become a spy, boss!" Vasquez laughed. "I would have made them come in as chaotic as a stampede."
Now Eve saw that 3TC, while having a place fit to his rank, was virtually isolated. She was so intent on watching their guests sitting at their places that she almost hit Striz.
She sent him a bloodcurdling stare and Striz, blushing, stammered:
"I, I ..."
"... I'll be more careful next time." JS handing his arm to Eve, continued the sentence for him. Then he grinned: "Don't fear, Striz, your little secret is safe."
"Secret?" an ashen faced Striz asked.
"About the Greys devices you and Badu didn't tell..."
"Hush!" Striz whispered, looking around to make sure no one had caught the conversation.
"I'm not a fink, but you owe me a favor."
"I'm not for sale!" Striz whispered primly.
"You'll be when Badu realizes you're the only witness between himself and 3TC's wrath." JS smiled knowingly.
The situation on Babushka was dramatic. A couple of meteorites air bursts hit some wooded areas where there were only isolated farms.
"Estimate blast energy: 15 Mt. Blast altitude above the surface: 8 Kilometres..." Vickie went on rattling off data while the disaster was shown in all its horror. Millions of trees had been knocked down by the explosions over areas covering thousands of square kilometres.
Sputnik, the capital of the colony, had been hit.
"It looks like the epicentre of an earthquake!" a shaken Farnese murmured.
Eve mind-saw that the president was imagining the effect of such an explosion on Capitol City, on the Earth.
"Or a volcanic explosion." muttered someone else.
"Decreased atmospheric transparency due to suspended dust, fluctuations on atmospheric pressure, the sky looks still aglow because high-altitude ice particles..." Vickie went on.
JS sent rescue teams looking for survivors.
"We can take aboard most of the refugees and carry them where they want." Eve offered petrified with dismay.
"It's a problem, Babushka was one of the new colonies to relieve our demographic pressure." 3TC said. "Maybe there's room on your planet," he probed.
"We have no planet, our ships are our planet." JS cut short.
When she received the news about Babushka, Gila was in the sick bay to check out some Rasharrs injured on Shundor and now in Maurr's ranks. Her mood gloomy, she missed her evenings at the Bad Girls' Tattle Parlour. Like an automaton she finished her work, and then took refuge in one of the most remote and solitary of Fierce's corridors.
Some years before, Luke, her still living sibling, had emigrated to Babushka where he had set up a greengrocer's shop. The last time they had been in touch, Luke had invited her to join him and give him a hand with the shop, but Gila had preferred adventure and luxury at Babel 9.
"Maurr," Fierce said, "there's Gila crying in corridor 3C-A2." Without them knowing, Fierce shared Eve's very idea that Maurr and Gila were a good match.
Exhausted from tears and pain for the alleged loss of her brother, Gila was dozing on a couch surrounded by a Gleenex box and a cup of cold coffee.
Maurr swept her up in his arms and went to her quarters.
"My brother ..." Gila sobbed.
"I know," he said handing her his handkerchief.
"I'm sorry, I look like a watering pot." she tried to smile.
Maurr nodded smiling. His eyes locked with hers. Her lips parted, then he dipped his head and covered her lips ...

Lovely image and story. I hope all goes well with Maurr and Gila. I'm a softy for happy romantic tales and both of these two could use some happiness. Very romantic scene with great poses and expressions. I like the bit about JS spending so much time with the seating arrangements. Many a function was spoiled with careless planning. Great work!
