Since the outbreak, Tanye didn't think she could be surprised anymore. But the past few hours had proven her wrong.
At the time, she and the other students in her university biological survey team had been isolated in the deepest woods of the North Carolina Blue Ridge. Nearly two weeks with no cell phones, no radios, and at least sixty miles to the nearest town. Then three of ... them... came out of the woods and in minutes her companions were injured or dead. She saved herself with the camp axe near her tent. The only one in her party uninjured, she swallowed her grief and treated the wounded. And then one by one... they turned... and she had to deal with them, too.
The town resembled the mess in her camp. Then she knew: This was a bio-emergency of the worst kind - maybe even an extinction-level event for mankind. More than anything, she had to get home to her family- her mother, father, sisters and brother. She hot-wired an SUV and drove it nearly four hundred miles before it ran dry. On foot, she soon learned the bio-morphed creatures weren't the only predators. Only her strength, speed and stealth saved her.
But it was too late. Her home was a burning crater and all of them were either dead.. or turned. Only her older sister got away. She smiled a sad smile at that: If anybody could have survived it had to have been her. So she tracked her through northern Georgia, sticking to the county roads and avoiding the killing grounds that had been interstate highways. Then she saw the medical center.
She had learned to look for sources of first aid supplies and food, and a medical center this large was a jackpot. Even when already looted, a careful search always turned up something. And then she started encountering odd things.
Things like - this place had never been looted. Bodies (or what was left of them) everywhere, but all the food and medical supplies were intact. Then another surprise: Searching the security office for fresh batteries, she found an extremely well stocked armory. Food and antibiotics were one thing, but guns and ammo too? She got real curious and decided to take a good look.
Then she discoverd the place's secret. Like many medical centers, part of the grounds were cordoned off for new construction. Partially completed buildings stared down from dark windows. She almost looked past them, when she noticed a door held open by a body. A faint blue electric glow emanated up as she descended the stairs. And there it was: At least a three story government research lab sprawled under the "incomplete" buildings. The main lights were out but computer screens and other equipment still lit the underground warrens with an eery blue glow. And then she found the canisters - many, many glowing green canisters. She debated putting one in her pack, but decided against it: She just didn't like the looks of these things.
And besides, she needed to get back topside quickly or run the risk of losing Michonne's trail again....
Three things happened within a few days time: 1) I tweaked my urban warrior character Tanye and pondered what to do with her; 2) I caught up several episodes of "Walking Dead"; 3) Mapps sent me his awesome new "Secret Government Labs" set - thanks Mike!

Awesome story and great scene! I really love the lighting, the way that green light bounces off her skin. I LOVE the Walking Dead, I hated to see the season finale.
