Description
Curtiss SOC "Seagull" floatplane heading back to the nest. In this case, the "nest" is the USS Astoria. There are some cool videos on UTube showing these cool floatplanes landing at sea and being recovered, as well as some catapult launches...it must have been a lot of excitement for the pilots. I always wondered how these planes landed in the open ocean, but interestingly, the recovering vessel would make a wide turn and the bird would land in the resulting area of relatively "smooth" water and then be winched onboard. Fascinating invention, the floatplane served as a limited range armed observation scout for the fleet with a long and distinguished service history despite being in reality from an earlier flying generation.

Fantastic art!!! This must be one of the best 'war like' images I've ever seen. Great art!

Can't get to much aviation/navel/WWII art. Very nice image. I think you out to change the camera position slightly up or down just so the plane doesn't get completely lost in the lines of the cruiser. It is a really good POV though. Keep 'em comin'.

Brilliant image Bill!, you're doing some mighty fine 'Fleet' images lately.Great atmos and more stunning 'waterwork', the letterbox format really gives a sense of the scale to this piece. 10/10++

Awesome to see the Seagull and co. getting around. Excellent render! Wasn't always fun though. There was a time a Walrus pilot misjudged his landing run and pranged into the side of the patient waiting HMAS Australia... He got badly knocked up. All these various spotter machines had a very high attrition rate with landing accidents etc.
