Description

Wild turkeys are pretty common around here. They sometimes wander by alone or in groups of as many as a dozen or more. This colorful character showing off his plumage came by our house yesterday accompanied by two friends. Benjamin Franklin argued for adopting the turkey as the national bird over the eagle, stating that "The Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America...a Bird of Courage.”. I've read that the wild turkey was wiped out in the West and a few decades ago wildlife biologist began importing eastern wild turkeys and now they are thriving again in the West. Excellent photo of this tom!
