Description

I know this isn't the clearest picture in the world, but it's a case of content first. By the time we got to this place, the light was almost gone and we were at the bottom of a pretty deep canyon. Water erosion has caused this cliff face to become riddled with holes, creating lacy patterns in the rock. Capitol Reef National Park, Utah See a larger view of the cliff HERE ... Bill was taking pictures of the whole thing (of course) and caught me getting my close-in shots.

Truly astonishing. Your photo doesn't make me crave a Crunchie bar as much as Bill's.

It looks like you've discovered a hive. It does look like a macro of something small until you see Bill's image and realize how truly large this is. Good choice of black and white makes it more dramatic.

Fascinating structure. Your view & Bill's complement each other very well - his captures the scale & color while yours captures the essence of the structure...

I had three thoughts when I saw this: 1: Swiss Cheese. 2: This looks like a tree stump that's inhabited by woodlice. 3: Swiss Chese. Yummy! Now that I've had those three thoughts, I can also say that I love the alien landscape vibe that this has. That whole part of the North American landmass is rather odd in that alien landscape sort of way; I'm surprised it hasn't been used in movies as much. Oh, they used a couple of locations in that movie: Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone. It's a cult movie, an acquired taste. Its claim to fame is that it's Molly Ringwald's first movie, and it's also considered pretty dreadful. I happen to like it, but I suspect that I like it because a group of the pivotal monsters in that movie came about because of a typo in the memo sent to the costume department. The actual monster costumes were supposed to be of "bat people" but in those days of typed and photocopied memos, the prop department people thought that the order was for "fat people" costumes, and so they made...well...dozens of latex fat suits that went on to become a part of some of the most creepy, amazingly effective monsters to ever grace the silver screen; sets were changed to make better use of the costumes and those costumes (and sets) went on to get a photo spread in OMNI Magazine. (I love that the director liked the "fat people" better than the intended "bat people" and so the bat people got axed and the fat people got creepy, and had enough pull to make a set-redesign necessary. (Okay, the scenery is pretty awesome too, but the acting and storyline...well...let's just say one doesn't watch Spacehunter for the story or the 1908s hairstyles. It's a murky visual feast. Oh, and it has some really creepy mutant babies too. Mutant babies throwing Molotov cocktails...yeah, the cannibalistic obese people and pyromaniac mutant babies doing an eerie almost-nursery-rhyme chant are reason enough to see that movie. And I thought of that because of some Spacehunter-style rock! Okay...no one ever said my mind ever makes normal associations. (Oh, and the bad guy in the movie is named Overdog. I like that name too.) So, back to this nicely textured rock. Amazing! Alien. Really cool. Had I been there, taking my own shots, I'd have looked up, just to make sure that there were no mutant children up above, passing a lighter around.
