Description
Under the Martian Sky
An Orion’s Arm future history image.
Space suited figures lend scale to this detail shot of my unique Mars Surface Rover/Personnel Transport and Mars Settler Lander. Lander’s extensible surface access elevator/airlock deployed (visible in frame to RIGHT).
Lander, space suited figures, and rover appropriately dirtied up – I went to some trouble to show how the wind distribution is affected, having blown through and around geometric obstructions and openings in the Landers frame and gears, this can be seen in how deposits of windblown material have settled on the Lander.
Atmosphere is custom, created in Bryce, color matched against Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity image PIA16769. This technique is made possible by the window-in-window feature in Windows 7 – I could hold an internet browser window open and visible in micro-view while I worked in the Bryce atmosphere editor, manipulating sky color, cloud color, mist, haze, ect. to match the image on the NASA website.

This sequence of images depict events around the Year Zero mark on my future history timeline – see link below.

Image Composition Note:
Atmosphere is custom, created in Bryce, as per notes above.
Terrains are Tectonics Evolved Desolace, Searing Mesa, and Arathi Peaks distressed in Terrain Editor.
Terrain textures are a combination of David Brinnen’s “Desert” texture and the stock Desolace texture.
Mars ground texture created in Photoshop and applied to the Bryce ground-plane with additional layers added in post-work. Texture sources are cropped and blended from Spirit and Opportunity rover images courtesy NASA/JPL.
Texture image source credit: NASA/JPL.
Space suit is a Google SketchUp 3DS model of the NASA Mk III suit design created by Max Grueter.
All other models are my own Bryce creations, constructed in Bryce 6.3 and rendered in Bryce 7 Pro.
As always thank you for your interest, thoughtful comments, and encouragement.

There's been some controversy about the colour balancing of Curiosity images - by the looks of it, you went for the authentic look.
