Description

Meet Big Al. My husband and I were walking around Catalina Island when I spotted a women walking an owl. She'd stop often and let the owl look around, or hop off her arm. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Of course, I had to find out what was going on and why she was walking an owl. She told me Big Al was working, she walks him around, to scare away the other birds. A natural deterrent to the other birds without causing them injury. Also, on another part of the island, her husband had some birds he "flew" around for the same purpose. I thought this was very interesting. I wish I could have spoken to her for a longer period, but they were busy and needed to get back to work. My previous upload, The Curve of Emotion. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs, ~Melinda~

So, lemme get this straight: you're telling me that this handsome fella is an employee? How cool is that? To top off that interesting bit of information, you've captured Big Al in all of his owl-ish glory and that is quite a feat as you've also captured something of his distinct manner--personality if you will. Whether it's there or not is open for debate, but you've shown us an owl that (were we to see him and others after seeing this photograph) we might be able to recognize which one happens to be Big Al. Well, that's how I take it. This is really great photography, and I'm kinda jealous...those avian people never cooperate and pose for me. But in all fairness, I don't know any working birds in Chicago either, maybe being on the job makes birds a bit more eye-to-camera photogenic. This is a great shot. I love the richness of it.

Big Al is handsome, but I can see where he would be intimidating to other birds. He reminds me of the old Wise potato chip owl from decades ago. I really like the way you framed this image the same way one might frame a human portrait. Great image...

Oh wow, an awesome shot of that awesome predator, with a white beard and mustache already, definitely giving you the evil eye(s), Melinda. I like the sidelighting and textures in this one.
