Description

This was a very sad thing to witness. We saw the swan quickly come out of the water next to us. Then we realised there was another swan on the bank. It was one of last years young, full grown with a few brown feathers still on, and it was dead. The adult kept nudging the dead swan as if trying to wake it up. It then started to pull at it trying to get a reaction. The dead cygnet was floppy, so it had just happened. We thing the high speed gusting wind had made it collide with a tree. It was under some brambles and trees at the waters edge. There was no obvious wounds only to the parents feelings. A touching event for any parent. Not a great photo I didn't want to intrude looking for a better angle.

What a poignant shot! It's an important reminder of so many different things, none-the-least of which is our connection with the world around us (something we like to pretend isn't really that big an issue.) The behavior you describe is the sort of behavior that scientists argue about constantly (whether or not any form of anthropomorphism is appropriate in our observations of the natural world). There are those who say that anthropomorphism doesn't exist because the premise that other animals bearing resemblence to us is egotistical, and that we are actually more like THEM. The argument is far more complex than I'm going into here, but this photo brings that to mind as it raises all sorts of questions in my mind. Is this a sad image because of the human ability to sympathize, or is it a sad image simply because sympathy, grief, shock, and all such things are a natural part of the non-plant world? Quite interesting, and, yes, quite touching.
