These guys were May Gibbs's villains in the 'Snugglepot and Cuddlepie' series! It's a Coast Banksia.

OOOhhh! A thing! I rather like it, though I've never seen or heard of such a critter-thingie-sort-of...um...life form, until now. I'm also woefully unfamiliar with Snugglepot and Cuttlepie: a situation that will soon be rectified, if it has stuff like this in it. I love this shot. Great stuff!

Mum was born in Australia and has a book of "Snugglepot and Cuddlepie" from the 1940's. Great illustrations and interesting stories. I've seen the plant at botanical gardens before...guess I never connected the two :D
