Description

The same part of the brook, from another POV, at noon when the sun is perpendicular. Here you can see the brilliance at its most. The latin word for the color of the brook's water was 'flavus', or 'fulvus' that is yellow-red. In Greek the word is 'xanthos', which means yellow, yellow-red, blond and even greenish. It is a name of rivers and river gods, such as the river near Troy. It is also a name for horses, for example one of Achilles's horses, one of the Dioskuroi twins' horses etc. The adjective 'xanthos' referred to a horse means 'bay', that is a reddish-brown animal, especially a horse having a black mane and tail. It is curious that the color of Homer's heroes' hair was either 'xanthos' or 'kyaneos'. Achilles's and Ulysess' hair color was 'xanthos'. The Greek word for dark blue, 'kyaneos', could also mean dark green, violet, black or brown. The ancient Greek word for a light blue, 'glaukos', also could mean light green, grey, or yellow, Yet we don't have to think that Hector's 'kyanos' hair was actually blue. In fact in Serbian, a southern Slavic language, there is an adjective, zuto',zute', commonly used for yellow, but when it is referred to a person's hair, to mean 'blond', Serbians use the word 'plava', blue. Hence 'plava kosa' means blond (blue) hair. It looks that Serbian was very conservative about hair color. Thanks for your kind comments.

Sandra, let me say how delighted I was to see the series continue. This is a superb capture, and I agree with you about this being the perfect pov. At this time of day the brook really comes alive, glistening like a magical pool. I was enthralled with the background info you provided on the name for the color of the brook.

A very striking image although it does remind me of a cheese omelet. Fascinating if somewhat confusing information on hair color. Thank you for sharing.

A sparkling image, but there goes my theory - from your last image; it can be quite confusing to read and understand all this ! (for the layman anyway) just too many variables IMHO ... but that's history now! thanks for sharing it. BB

I love your complex bits of history and anthropology. They are always quite engrossing, though I also have to say that when I first looked at this photo, my mind went off in a more Czech direction (I'm pining for the cellar bars) and I thought: "Oooh, pivo!" which in English translates to: "Oooh, beer!" Sometimes I wonder about me! The color is intense and unexpected, brilliant and quite captivating.
