Description

Just to note, this is a "technical" posting and not really artistic. For whatever reason, I've always had a fascination with wireframe renders. I think it's the engineer in me. I finally broke down and bought Digital Carvers Guild Wireframe Pro and gave it a shot. Here's what popped out. In the first render, we see what Carrara will generate using the standard wireframe rendering engine in draft mode. Don't be confused as this is not a "draft". It uses the draft rendering engine set to wireframe mode. This model uses several vertex meshes which are smoothed. I don't know if that's what's faking out the renderer but but we can see that a lot of the details are messed up on the primary hull. The second image is a screen capture directly out of the assembly room in wireframe mode. Interestingly enough, Carrara (in this mode) seems to be able to capture the shape and get things captured correctly (although, the wires don't follow all the vertices that actually exist in some of the meshes, but are interpolated). I don't know what Carrara is doing in the wireframe mode in the assembly room but to be honest, I've actually liked the wireframes that are generated in the assembly room better than in the draft wireframe rendering engine! Not sure how or what that all works (or doesn't work) but we can see the difference. The third render is using Digital Carvers Guild WIreframe Pro. It's quite clear the differences that can be generated. This third render is done to hide the lines behind the front lines. I also rendered this with a wireframe width of 1 but at a larger pixel size just to smooth out the wires a little more (a trick I used when I only had Carrara's draft wireframe engine). The results speak for themselves. It's a really great render. One interesting thing to note is that the rendering engine took a while to hammer this out. I launched the render and nothing happened for a little while (15 minutes). As stated before, the model has a LOT of smoothed vertex meshes and we can see how Carrara generates the polys here. I had no idea just how deeply Carrara would go to smooth out those meshes. Certainly, the rendering engine had to take some time to sort all that out. Just enjoying all the rendering options that can be crunched out. -Kix
