Description

Unfortunately I don't have 10 - 15000.00 it would take to buy a 800mm lens so I thought I'd do a little experiment. I took my Canon EOS 7D, attached my EF 400mmf5.6L and a 2x teleconverter to it. Since the 7D has a 1.6 sensor, that combination converts to awhopping 1280 mm. I really didn't believe I could get a useable shot with it. Felt it would come out way too soft for my standards. I was pleasantly surprised and may use the combination when I can't get close, but really need the shot. Sorry it's not as sharp as usual. Now you know why. :)

back when I had my 50-500mm I used a 2x and a1.5x together on a 7D/50D. seeing your clarity you must have a very steady hand/arm or used a tripod. I used the combination for moon shots on an expensive(used) Manfrotto tripod/head and even there it was difficult to stay aligned with the moon I am impressed

Terrific! You could get a great shot with a pinhole camera with your skills!

There is no guarantee you would do better with the high priced lens. My friend sent back a Canon 300 mm f 2.8 lens and, after many weeks, they said they could find nothing wrong with it but "it is a bit soft" as they put it. Well, he paid $7,200 plus converters and it is not as good as my Nikon 70-300 mm which cost $800. Again, my question about Canon using Canada as the outlet for 'factory seconds' comes to the fore.

This is a fantastic shot under the circumstances and it zooms well too.

Wow, but a darn good shot! I lust for one of those long-range lenses myself, but also can't afford that kind of money. 300 mm is my longest reach, and it's just not enough...
