Description

After I stopped by Bill and Tara on Saturday morning and to my surprise they had just started to get up when I got there, we agreed that we would meet near BRYCE NATIONAL PARK in the evening. They would stay in Tropic and I had made reservations in Cannonville, about 5 miles from Tropic. When I left them I decided to go back toward CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK and see if I could get some pictures of the beautiful, multi-hued sandstone formations I had seen the previous afternoon. But the sky was overcast, it looked like it may rain or snow, and everything looked drab. This picture is just short of the top of an overlook. The tree struck me as a Bristlecone Pine. I asked Tara about it but she wasn't sure. Curious, I looked it up once I came back home. There are three types of Bristlecone Pines occurring in the American Southwest and this one may be the Pinus Longaeve which grows in Eastern California, Nevada, and Utah between elevations of 5,600 to 11,200-ft. Bristlecone Pines are the oldest known living organisms, with single plants having been alive for a little less than 5,000 years. The description given of these particular plants matches what I could see here. This picture was taken on 13 April 2013, Sig... PS: I am tired and I will comment tomorrow!

I don't know if it's a bristlecone, but you got a gorgeous shot of it silhouetted against the sky like that.

Holy cats! I think I got that exact same tree. :) When I post it, I'll make a link here and you can see what you think. it was up on a hill, and the ground was all chunked up Moenkopi layers. There was a path up the hill, and a couple of signs, and at least a 180-degree view. This is great! I like the low pov.

There are many places in Bryce supporting Ancient Bristlecone Pines. From as low as the bottom of the "Hat trail" to atop "Rainbow point". Only know this as I've covered every square inch of trail in Bryce having only lived 90 minutes away in Cedar City for years
