Description
Over Noctis Labyrinthus
An Orion’s Arm future history image.
Image is part of a sequence of images depicting events centered around the Year Zero mark on my future history timeline – establishment of a permanent human settlement on the surface of Mars. See link:
Future History Timeline Context Link: Orion’s Arm Future History Timeline.
A Continuation of my Mars Settlement vehicle EDL (Entry, Descent, Landing) sequence.
I wanted to capture one of these landing craft scaled against the vast and desolate Martian wilderness. The descent ground track carries the settlement Landers over the southern edge of Noctis Labyrinthus, a region of maze like tilted eroded blocks, steep-walled valleys, and pit-like formations.
To disambiguate the sense of scale: the landing craft is slightly taller (by 60 feet) than a Saturn 1b and nearly 6 times its diameter.
Imaged here the vehicle is descending through 1000 feet, traveling horizontally towards the landing target located on the broad planes visible in the distance.
Terrains are multiple replications of Tectonics Evolved Desolace 1 through 4 arranged to reflect the general character of the region. Texture is the stock Desolace texture.
Atmosphere is custom, created in Bryce, color matched against raw true-color images from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity.
Landing craft model is my own Bryce creation, constructed in Bryce 6.3 and rendered in Bryce 7 Pro.
Post-work in Photoshop includes rocket flare and smoke plume.
As always thank you for your interest, thoughtful comments, and encouragement.

Looks like a hazardous place to land!

Indeed, you wouldn't want to actually set down in Noctis Labyrinthus - the hike out would be an epic test of endurance.

Orion's Arm... nice. I've done my fair share of contributions there too. The lighting's excellent and so is the integration of the postwork.

mboncher, Thanks for the view and comment, however, to disambiguate, my future history has no connection to the Orion's Arm Universe Project. I chose the name as a double-entendre reference: 1. to the fission initiated nuclear pulse rocket known as Orion developed by General Atomics under Ted Taylor and physicist Freeman Dyson in 1958 – this is the core interplanetary transportation technology depicted in my fiction. 2. to the location of our sun in the Orion Arm of this galaxy. This covers the core propulsion technology which opens the solar system to man in my future history and references the extent of my future history, from the dawn of the interplanetary age to the point where man moves out among the stars. See the future history timeline context link in the image caption above.
