It is simple .. perhaps not in the way you imagine. I point to the statement made by physicist Freeman Dyson: “Life has this marvelous adaptability – it’s able to adapt itself to almost anything.” Freeman Dyson’s words are those of an imaginative, creative mind. A mind possessed of brilliance, a mind capable of mounting any challenge, a mind informed with knowledge, and the confidence knowledge brings. The kind of mind possessed by a man who sees in life an infinity of possibility, a man who sees and that opportunity for mankind is near boundless. That is what an artist is – confidant in skill and knowledge, ready to meet the future armed with creative energy, infused with joy at the prospect of things to come. I contrast this with “simple minded” people who view life and the future with terror. It is terror which inspires people to create Armageddon inspired imagery – terror and not imagination. I actually think people who obsessively create and post dooms-day imagery are small and frightened beings, frightened of everything they have failed to make an effort to understand. I believe that they are people living in terror – terror of their own perceived shortcomings: in this age where high speed internet allows anyone an open platform on which to display the product of their creative efforts to a world-wide audience, these small minded frightened little people realize how high the bar is raised by the amazing creations being posted all around them. The doomsday they fear is coming – It is not a doomsday for humanity, it is their own, of their own making, and a well deserved doomsday for the fearful and the incompetent – it is a world where the educated, the competent, the confidant, the creative, and the bold will forever dwarf those who are too afraid to embrace it. I think of it as evolution in action, and I do believe humanity will be, forever, better off for it.
