Brad Pitt and I share the exact same birthday (month, day, year) outside of that, our stories diverge considerably. Mr. Pitt went on to become an internationally famous superstar, while I have led the much more interesting life of the starving artist. I come from a long line of storytellers (whose gift for gab stretches back through the mists of time to our native Ireland) and professional malcontents who were seemingly born to create something in the arts, be it music, writing, sculpture, painting, or photography. I started writing at age 12 with a screenplay with my cousin Ryan about a planet where everyone looked like Elton John entitled "Don't I Know You?" More screenplays followed, several of which received epic Super-8 production with budgets that sometimes ran up to $10. A few even had sound!  More writing followed: songs, poems, short stories, numerous unfinished novels, etc.. Somewhere in there was an attempt at being a rock star...
Still living at home, at age 22, my father dropped an elderly Nikromatt 35-mm film camera into my lap, in the hopes that I would "make a go of it" as a photojournalist. That didn't happen, but I did develop an abiding love of photography that along with writing and archival work have been among the chief passions of my life. When it comes to my photography, I try to be as creative as possible while at the same time striving for a documentary/archival quality. The only set rules I adhere to, when it comes to making pictures are: 1.) Try not to make the picture blurry, and 2.) Don't drop the camera.

I have a really strange image of Pavel in a John LeCarre novel. Oh dear! International intrigue will never been the same! I remember the night in this image as clearly as I remember that night we first met. I almost wore purple, and in retrospect, I probably should have, but oh well. Too bad the Belmont Rocks aren't there, along with really snarfy female cop built like the love child of a bulldog and a Sherman tank. This is a great photo, filled with layers and layers of good memories. It was such fun doing all the stuff we'd been doing that day, especially since Tara and Bill were there (and Marilyn, too...via the oh-so-21st Century convenience of video chat.) That was a great night. It's been a great 14 years, and I'm looking forward to a grand minimum of 14 more. By the way, I love the genre of this photo.

Aren't friends just the BEST thing ever?? And 14 years is a long time. Even though I've spent a short time with the two of you, I feel like it's been much longer. Here's to lots more 14's!!

Sometimes the way things happen is just right, isn't it? Such seemingly insignificant choices change our lives forever. I'm glad for the two of you that you met, and I know 14 years is only the beginning ... a drop in the bucket, as it were. You give each other an anchor, which is a Good Thing, and I love it that I've been able to bask in your friendship in person. :) This image is such a great metaphor. Together, you've got each other's backs, even though your individual focus might be elsewhere. No matter the direction either of you are looking, you're standing together while you do it, and THAT is the perfect description of a most excellent friendship. Much love to you both, dear one, and all my best wishes for oodles more good years to come.

Congratulations to you both on your enduring friendship! Great image, too - reminds me of Sherlock & Holmes, but you really need to get Chip the authentic deerstalker hat!

Very cool capture! Wonderful textures and composition. I like it a lot. Here's to many more years! Apropos absolutely nothing, the way the mirror is broken on the right makes me think of a partial outline of a bare foot.
