Description

Fourteen years ago today I met the best friend I've ever had. For, on this day in 1999, I was introduced to the wondrous presence known as J. Chip Howell; and things have never been the same. It's been an interesting ride, with enough international intrigue to surpass a John Le Carre novel. Here's to another fourteen years. And fourteen more after that. And another fourteen after that. And another... This portrait was made in a large piece of broken mirror in the alley outside my building late on one of the great days when Tara and Bill where here for Ninja Confab 2. Photographed in the Albany Park area of Chicago on October 2, 2011.

I have a really strange image of Pavel in a John LeCarre novel. Oh dear! International intrigue will never been the same! I remember the night in this image as clearly as I remember that night we first met. I almost wore purple, and in retrospect, I probably should have, but oh well. Too bad the Belmont Rocks aren't there, along with really snarfy female cop built like the love child of a bulldog and a Sherman tank. This is a great photo, filled with layers and layers of good memories. It was such fun doing all the stuff we'd been doing that day, especially since Tara and Bill were there (and Marilyn, too...via the oh-so-21st Century convenience of video chat.) That was a great night. It's been a great 14 years, and I'm looking forward to a grand minimum of 14 more. By the way, I love the genre of this photo.

Aren't friends just the BEST thing ever?? And 14 years is a long time. Even though I've spent a short time with the two of you, I feel like it's been much longer. Here's to lots more 14's!!

Sometimes the way things happen is just right, isn't it? Such seemingly insignificant choices change our lives forever. I'm glad for the two of you that you met, and I know 14 years is only the beginning ... a drop in the bucket, as it were. You give each other an anchor, which is a Good Thing, and I love it that I've been able to bask in your friendship in person. :) This image is such a great metaphor. Together, you've got each other's backs, even though your individual focus might be elsewhere. No matter the direction either of you are looking, you're standing together while you do it, and THAT is the perfect description of a most excellent friendship. Much love to you both, dear one, and all my best wishes for oodles more good years to come.

Congratulations to you both on your enduring friendship! Great image, too - reminds me of Sherlock & Holmes, but you really need to get Chip the authentic deerstalker hat!

Very cool capture! Wonderful textures and composition. I like it a lot. Here's to many more years! Apropos absolutely nothing, the way the mirror is broken on the right makes me think of a partial outline of a bare foot.
