Description
Fort St. Elmo (St. Elme in French) is located in the hills above Collioure & makes an impressive sight from the town. The tower dates from the 8th century & like the Chateau Royal (from my last posting) has been added to significantly over the centuries - some of the walls are over 8 feet thick. It was involved in many conflicts between France & Spain, including the 30 Years War (1618-1648) & has been partially destroyed & rebuilt many times. It was privately owned for some time, but is now open to the public & houses a museum (which, unfortunately, we didn't have time to visit)...

You have caught St. Elmo's "fire" in this capture. How would you have liked to charge up that hill in a suit of armor? An excellent photo!
