Description

First and foremost, let me say that this is a Carrara re-creation of a painting done by John Harris titled MASS: The Building of FTL1 I'm not nearly creative enough to invent such an image but I did want to try to recreate it using Carrara. John Harris' painting (at least in my opinion) is an amazing piece of work. This re-creation of it is certainly different and does not capture all of the "details" that Harris put into his original work. This took me two weeks to build using a couple of weekends and an hour or so each night. It was sort of a maddening project given the large number of details in the source painting. Am I done? That's a good question. However, I stared at this thing all day yesterday while I was rendering a 7000 pixel wide version (resized here) and I just don't want to fuss with it any longer. I've stared at this thing so hard and so long that I need to either accept it as it is or just take a good long break from it. This scene has 2,494 objects in it. I did not use the replicator at all in this model but I certainly did "duplicate" lots of things. There are a LOT of teeth around the engine tubes and there are rows of things which were duplicated. Many of those thousands of objects are from duplication madness! There's a thread over in the Carrara forum which you can visit which has a little more information on the development of this image if you're interested. I intend to print this big and hang it on my wall when I return to the US (I'm on long term assignment in Japan right now). Harris' original painting is something I really dig. I haven't been able to find a print for sale that has the size I'm interested in. Such a large scale image needs to be printed large! My less amazing version will still be an interesting addition to my wall. I feel like I want to write a book on the journey it took me to get to this point with this project but I'll stop here. I hope you will enjoy where I landed! On a last note, please realize that this image has much light and dark with many details hidden in the darker areas. Different monitors will display this image sometimes very well and sometimes very poorly. Please realize that a gamma correction might be needed to get adjust the image so that you can see it well. I did up the contrast, brightness, added some noise, and softened the original image into the form that's represented here (all post render using Paint Shop Pro). Enjoy!

That's gorgeous. Awesome sense of scale and atmosphere. I know what you mean about staying with a thing too long and not knowing when it is really done - that is an annoying trait all artists share. Sometimes our perfectionist tendencies can be our own undoing. Looks done to me - well done. Great work and a fine tribute.

One of my favourite Harris paintings. I even used it as an inspiration of one of my recent uploads. Not as technically accurate as yours, more an representation. The work you've put in is very clear and you should be very proud.
