Description

It’s more than a year since I stood on the el-platform at Wellington Avenue, more than a year since I took shelter from the sudden downpour. I’d forgotten that I saw strange things on that platform: shoes with bands of blue marking the seams between their rubberized soles and uppers, a disembodied arm, holding an umbrella and giving no evidence that a human was attached to it; the tooth of some mythic creature suspended from the neck of a guy, ported into whatever digital musical universe slithered out of his iPod. Now, a year later, I have found the photo, and so I figured that I should probably post it here, as it’s one that I like for a number of nearly-inconsequential reasons. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all on the verge of a great week.

I am glad you did post it and with the commentary as I would be wondering about that arm.

a very strange juxtaposition in this single image - it's like you've two separate photos stitched down the beam - almost like the viewers right is seeing into the real world where this chap comes from and that the human visage is actually a disguise - but not quite perfect as depicted by the green arm

Love it! It is interesting how many things we overlook when we are in a hurry. It is nice to have a snapshot of this moment to go back and examine. Wonderful!

Really funny pic ... the thumb I had thought: hey, what a body ... lol To me it is often the case where I think: Why do I have photographed here? My "search images" then migrate often in the trash. Good thing you have not done it here.

Another great proof that good shots should ripe to reveal themselves in a new light. May even take long years.

I love how the bricks on the wall in the background look like a body of water, or perhaps a sliver of the sky. The idea that bricks would sit there imitating the sky as strange cartoon-like dis-sociated parts of people drift through makes this picture even more surreal.

As stated, many anomalies to ponder in this shot, Chip; your Chicago apparently is a gateway to another reality!

What you have here is obviously someone who is a fashion pioneer. You watch, next year everyone will be wearing single color jackets with one green arm. Outstanding catch. Thanks for the laugh.

It reminds me of that old gag (I remember the Monkees doing it, but they're not the only ones) where a bunch of people come out from behind a very thin tree trunk. :) LOVE that green arm!
