Description

Devils Postpile National Monument contains one of the worlds finest examples of visible basaltic columns. Nearly 100,000 years ago a Basaltic lava lake some 400 feet(122 meters) in depth filled this valley. The Lava cooled slowly and cracks formed on the surface to release tension. The slow cooling allowed for the cracks to form into hexagons, one of natures most efficient and stable shapes. As the interior cooled the cracks deepened to form the columns. During the last ice age some 20,000 years ago, a glacier exposed this cliff and polished the top of the Basaltic columns smooth. Today the face of this cliff is still ever changing by the forces of weathering and earthquakes To the kind souls that leave their mark whether a comment, rating, or save the image as a fav, you are very much appreciated, thank you!!! Thank you all that viewed my last image below. thumb_2443246.jpg

Beautiful place! PoV gives a strange feeling, as if everything was going to switch to the time of the photo.

What a fascinating post. The last ice age the world has seen was 'The Great Ice Age' which was only 11,000 years ago. I wonder how these forms were effected by that one. 5/5

Yes, I like that. A great geological shot. The columns play wonderfully into the perspective and take you to the eternity of the heavens. There is great depth with the distinct layers of rubble, columns, trees and finally sky.
