Description

As a young man He dreamed dreams Of war and peace Brainwashed that if you could kill enough Then there would have to be harmony There was no such thing As shades of gray He saw everything in black and white If you weren’t with us You were wrong Pride overrode truth He believed that patriotism Meant you never questioned If you didn’t follow blindly You were a traitor But as the big clock ticked And he saw friends die Children running in fear Mothers crying in the streets He tried to figure out For what Because they believed differently Or because they were sitting On top of minerals we wanted He watched us give weapons To people that we hated Because they hated other people We hated more Baffled by why it took a week To get water to people stranded By Katrina When we can bomb any country in the world In a hour if we wanted too Could it be because the stranded Were so poor They could never donate To the rich who make those decisions Now the young man Is a old man And he refuses to fall in line To follow blindly His patriotic friends Call him Judas Because he refuses to kiss the cheek Of the condemned Condemned by geography Patriotism means you judge situations By where you are from It has nothing to do with the truth It’s sad The man crying Trying to figure out How we got here Is the outlaw Hello everyone this one is one of my longer poems but I believe it is true. Thanks for your support and for your friendship Randy

Yep...but when you stop and think about it, Patriotism is just a fancy word for 'national incest' and for some reason that's acceptable. I like the directions this poem takes, the wonderful truths: (isn't it also interesting that traitors are necessary for the existence of patriots and messiahs: without kissing traitors, the actions we venerate wouldn't have come into being. Hmmm...surely I can't be the only one who sees that.) I like this a lot, and it reminds me of my favorite Frank Herbert quote. In an interview, (and in a few author commentaries concerning his Dune universe and other stories) he stated: "Power does not corrupt; instead, power attracts corrupt people. and I find it telling that it's the people who consider themselves powerful are the people who say that there is a need for patriotism. Patriotism does nothing but divide. I love the way you point that out, while showing us the progression of one person's growth. I'm glad I read this.

Its a story as old as ancient Greece, Randy. Greed and arrogance. And a tradition of young men and women dying to satisfy the egos of old men. Outstanding poem and never more truthful.
