There was a time when the British Museum understood that living within your "means" naturally meant that salaries for beancounters whining over the bills at head office would be kept below average so that, when the time came, certain expeditions to the Far-East could approach the level of "mean" applied by those cashed-up Sinology endowments funding a certain whip-cracking academic in the USA. However, from bitter experience, Dr Ebony "Bunny" Love, the BM's erstwhile "Mean girl," knows that if you are caught in a race to find the Buddha's transcendental megaweapons in opposition to rogue factions of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, you can be sure your "dig" is going to be needing some ...um, trenches...
