The image AntÃÂpodas (antipodes) was requested by some of my friends for including the Web listing of a geocache.
Geocaching is an activity in which participants look for containers (called caches or geocaches), hidden in urban or rural zones. The location of a cache is given through its GPS coordinates: the search requires a GPS receiver or an smartphone with the appropriate application. The cache can contain several small items which can be traded, and a log for recording date and code name of the finders.
But geocaching includes other possibilities. In some cases, coordinates must be found through previous work, e.g., looking for clues in an city area, or solving a problem or riddle. Caches in a mountain zone are usually easy to find, but reaching the place can require walking or climbing. And the main problem in a city is to retrieve the cache without being noticed.
Hiding the cache requires to find the appropriate place, to hide the box with its contents and to publish coordinates, details and other information in a Web page. The most important website is www.geocaching.com. More of 2000000 caches are listed at present through the world.
The cache TALLERES / ANTI SWAN LAKE has placed by my friends in a pine forest in central Spain. Its exact place was chosen because in New Zealand there is a cache in the opposite coordinates (antipodes) called SWAN LAKE (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC42KCM). It is nearby a dam where swans can be seen sometimes.
And the objective of the picture was to convey the idea of the two very different places, linked by their opposite coordinates. It can be seen at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC4BV78
One of items in the Spanish box has been requested to be carried to the cache in New Zealand. Its trip can by followed in the geocaching website, and it will require many time and many interchanges, but we hope it will succeed in crossing the world.
