Description
The basement felt colder than usual, the damp found it's way deep into him, causing him to shiver. The feeling of loss had already gripped him tightly, and she hadn't even left... leaving for the first time. She had depended upon him for nearly everything for decades. And he depended on her for the only companionship he had ever needed or wanted. The truth was he had grown old without her, passed her by in mortal years even though she was tens of decades older than he. He had given his entire life to protecting her, hiding her exsitance from the outside world, kept her clothed, cared for and most of all fed. That was until last night when he had suffered his first failure. The bum he had picked should have been easy, but it seemed the wino wasn't without protection of his own, and proved to be more able than he looked at first glance. The knife had penetrated deep, gashing open something inside. The blood took hours to stop, it spurted, at first, thin streams of crimson, and slowly ebbed into a seeping trickle that soaked the sheets of his bed. The girl, if indeed that was what she was, was left with nothing to stem the thirst that was boiling inside. The hours until dark had dragged by torturously slow, even in his pain he wanted nothing more than to give her what she needed. Even in this fevered state he knew she would never drink from him. She had taken a vow some 50 years ago and would never break it now, even as he lay at deaths door. His thoughts were not on his own death, rather all he could wonder was how she would survive, who would care for her and protect her when he was dead and gone? She stood a long time there in the shadows, never uttering a word. In all the years they had shared, she rarely showed emotion of any sort. He knew she loved him, or was it pity, like that of a human when they find an animal dead on the shoulder of some dirt road? She stood there until she could wait no longer, then silently she pivoted and walked through the door and out into the chilly night...

Sold....that's how I buy Books, pick one up and read the intro, it either grabs you or it don't, that's a keeper. Awesome work man, Bravo Peace On the turning away From the pale and downtrodden And the words they say Which we won't understand "Don't accept that what's happening Is just a case of others' suffering Or you'll find that you're joining in The turning away" On the Turning Away...Pink Floyd
