Description
The continuing story of Zam’s Prehistoric World
Narrative:
“Wait up!” Nam shouted.
“Leave me alone!” Kaz yelled back over her shoulder.
Kaz was running down the path towards the river with Nam sprinting to catch up. He was surprised at how fast she could run, but did manage finally to come to pace with her.
“What’s wrong?” Nam was breathing hard in the thin mountain air.
Kaz stopped suddenly and Nam shot past her and had to slide to a stop. Nam turned around and looked at Kaz, his face a cloud of confusion.
“I have to obey my father,” Kaz said, “I have to wed the boy Spirit he is sending me to.”
“No,” Nam stated simply, “You don’t.”
Kaz just looked at Nam for a minute then glanced around and spoke in a hushed tone.
“We can’t defy father,” Kaz said.
“We won’t,” Nam stated and continued, “We will obey and go to this Spirit he is sending you to, but there is a way.”
“How?” asked Kaz.
“It is my right to challenge anyone to single combat for the right to wed you, even a Spirit. Not even your father, the Night Spirit, can stop me from giving challenge; it is the law of the tribes of all the people.”
Kaz smiled and a moonbeam illuminated Nam in a bluish white light.
“Oh stop that,” Nam said, as he tried brushing the moonbeam away.
“Did you just ask me to marry you, Nam Hunter?” Kaz beamed.
Nam blushed in the moonlight and mumbled, “Maybe,” then turned and headed toward the river, “Are you coming?”
Kaz skipped along behind him.
---
Standing in the shadows two silent figures watched as the youth passed by them.
“He has become defiant, brother,” said the Moon Spirit.
“Yes he has, sister,” replied the Night Spirit.
“You haven’t told me who the Spirit is you are sending your daughter to,” The Moon Spirit said.
The Night Spirit looked at his baby sister, “No I haven’t, sister,” The Night Spirit replied.
The Moon Spirit made a face and stuck her tongue at her brother.
“Can Nam win a challenge against this Spirit, brother,” asked the Moon Spirit.
“No, he can not,” The Night Spirit began, “He will not even have a chance to raise his blade, but will be crushed to helplessness within a moment.”
“Nam beat the War Spirit in a fight, brother,” The Moon Spirit protested.
The Night Spirit shook his head and said, “The Spirit he will face is far more powerful then the War Spirit, sister.”
“I am uncertain of your plan, brother, but I am certain I do not like it.” The Moon Spirit said.
The Night Spirit was silent.
