Description

It would seem that I’m quite good at maintaining a particular custom: that of missing birthdays on the days that they occur. Perhaps this is because of my belief that one should celebrate birthdays every day. One gets more free stuff that way, after all…and…well…that idea works for me. I’d thought to photograph a keylime cheesecake for Carin’s birthday, but I realized that the cheesecake in question would probably not survive long enough to pose for a photo; if I had the ability would have photographed some of Chicago’s native wildlife, but because of various environmental factors, many of Chicago’s interesting natives aren’t hanging around in camera range: nothing as interesting as fibbing elephants and hyenas attempting to gate crash a barbecue. I suspect that such incidents are only experienced in areas where elephants and hyenas would find the need to…well…do whatever it is that they do, while being incredibly photogenic (or at least shamelessly self interested). Because I couldn’t find such four-legged people, I settled on a duo of pigeons. I suppose they’re rock pigeons, in an official sense, but most of Chicago’s pigeons are actually the descendants of bird-cage escapees, and thus they are simple urban pigeons. I have no pigeon stories as interesting as the elephant and hyena stories I heard from Carin, during a visit to Chicago, but I can safely say that these two birds allowed me to get rather close, before changing their pose and…well..facing the other way, for wholly pigeon-ish reasons. As I like these two, I find that it is only fitting to offer this image as a belated birthday dedication, or as the title of this piece alliterates: Belated Birthday Birdies. Happy Birthday (some time later) Carin! Hopefully you’ll be celebrating it all year long. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re in the midst of a great weekend.

Hmmm, I used to make a mean key lime pie once upon a time. I must dig up my recipe some time. I love pigeons. If there is a God then they are proof positive that he has a sense of humour. Very clever at once with being hopelessly transparent. Any they can fly. Though they prefer to wait for you to just drop that hotdog bun in front of them. And if you wait too long, they will peck at your toes to remind you. I learned that the hard way of coarse. These two look like they're close buddies. Maybe buddies with benefits. I'm glad that they found a nice cosy spot to hang out - maybe nest. Well away from the cat; also evidence that God has a sense of humour. But that's another story.

I think Andrea is right. They look quite comfortable together, and exceedingly couple-ish. What a great shot, and a wonderful dedication! :)

Well it seems you found some native wildlife after all. I think the reason they turned their tails to you was to let you know they had other things in mind. You know, wildlife. Anyway, they make a cute couple, just right for a birthday image.

Dearest Chip - you have such a way with words. I have just read the narrative twice just in case I missed something the first time! Thank you so much for the lovely pigeons and wishes! I'm very glad you decided on them rather than keylime cheesecake. I don't eat pigeons!!! LOL... They look so comfortable and cosy and content - just what I need in this freezing (well not Chicago type freezing) weather here in Johannesburg. We are in the dead of winter and I sincerely dislike it! I have decided this year that I should go north for at least one of my forthcoming birthdays. I also want to experience a summer solstice and not a winter solstice birthday! I miss you guys so much! Time for you to venture south me thinks!!! Hugs!!! Carin xx
