Description

Tonight, I was at the bedside of a dear friend whom I've known for 39 Years. I met him on my first duty station, USS Enterprise, CVAN 65. He passed away at 1630 hours in his sleep. His wife Willie (my ex); his older sister, Mary; our son, Josiah & his wife; my step-son Aaron & his wife; and various friends and other members were there. We told him that it was okay, that he could go and that we love him. He took his last breath and passed on. I know that he is at last at peace but it is still very hard. Phil, my friend, I wish you Fair Winds and Calm Seas and the stars to guide you. As he was an avid bicyclist and he has participate in events like this, I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate this shot of last year's Bridge Pedal in memory

I am so sorry for you loss, Mike. It is always hard to lose a friend you have had for so long. This is by 19th century poet Henry Van Dyke. It has given me comfort in the past. I hope it does the same for you. ~~~~~ A Parable of Immortality "I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, 'There she goes!' Gone where? Gone from my sight ... that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, 'There she goes!' there are other eyes watching and other voices ready to take up the glad shout 'Here she comes!'"

One of the hardest things to do is to tell them it's OK to go, but it's the final act of love and kindness you can give them. I know it was a tearful moment when I told my dad it was OK to go and join his brother and family. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, and to his family. A beautiful dedication, Mike.

I'm very sorry for your loss, it is very hard to lose a friend. You have the consolation that could say goodbye, and accompany him to the last moment. The image of cyclists moving away from the camera is a beautiful allegory of his departure, Mike.
