Description
I am finishing up another project for Donovan Morningfire, an urban fantasy alchemist. I wanted a really spectacular, or at least weird-looking, potion in lab glassware. I decided to play with shaders and Carrara's Anything Glows light. The flask is from the 3dt labware (free on Renderosity) with one of the included C8 glass shaders applied to make it easier to see. The potion inside has 1 of pauljs 75's C5 camo shaders (also a Rendo freebie) applied. I needed to make this shader look like a liquid, so I checked the values for the C8 alcohol shader's Highlight, Shininess, Reflection, Refraction and Transparency channels and used similar values for the camo shader. Finally, for a touch of magic, I added the Glow channels to the flask and camo shaders.
To see how it was going, I did a lot of close up test renders of the hand and flask. I liked the look of this one enough to to post for everyone to ooh and ah over.

OK, I'm not that good at how-to's for this because I barely have a clue how things like shaders & so on work, but I'll try. This is done in Carrara 8.1x. (It's the latest non-beta version). The flask and the potion are props included in the 3dt labware set. To make the flask more visible, I used Blue Crystal, one of the Glass shaders that comes with the program, to make the flask more visible. I used a shader from pauljs 75's C5 procedural camo shaders. This is meant for cloth, so it didn't look like a liquid. So I checked the channel settings for the Alcohol Basic shader in C8 & changed most of the channel values (in %) of the camo shaders to the Alcohol values. Finally, the glow is from C8's Anything Glows Light. To use this light, just select it from the Lights dropdown in the Assembly Room. Any shader that has the Glow channel value set >0 will glow. The settings I used were ~ 10% for the flask itself and ~ 30% for the potion
