Description

This will be the last entry for the Sumela Monastery series. I want to thank those of you who stayed with the series and to those who caught even some of them. This is a deep shot of Sumela, hoping to give you some idea of the depth and scale of this cliff hugging structure and a sense of the vibrant colors that its creators and nature have imparted. Here we look into the heart of the monastery where the monks would have spent their daily lives, the workshops, bakeries, kitchens and library. For all the wanton damage imparted on its church, the monastery still retains an element of peace and tranquility. It was well worth the drive and scramble to get to it.

Great series. This vertical image goes well with your first view image. Nicely composed and great parting shot. That must have been a great journey with an enlightening arrival. At least the return journey must be downhill and give you time to contemplate. Thanks for sharing all this.

I've missed some of these since I was traveling, so will go back & check them out when I have time. This is a fine view of this fascinating location & though more sophisticated architecturally, in it's basic geometric structure it reminds me of some of the native American cliff dwellings I've visited in the southwest...

The architectural styles fascinates me. Angled corners, old paths, romantic landscape. Protected in the rock and the roofs offer at the same time as sun terraced. As aerial view of the village as in stone beaten relief see!

When I was looking through the thumbnail in your gallery at first I thought is was the clift dwelling from southern Colorago then a reconstruction of them so I just had you look closser. To my delight it was in Turkey, a beautiful photo and now that I have seen the serries, many thanks for takein us along., Photosynthesis has some beautiful shots of the southwest cliff dwellings if you haven't seen them yet.
