Description

I was a bit taken back by some of the comments left on my last image (Brennan's Truth) is an understatement. Please read the bit in the first comment below, if you will. The only 'darkness' about Brennan is that he 'remembers' things that he doesn't know why he remembers them. And if he has any more of a 'story' than what I've posted, it is that as a child he was tapping in to what some call an 'atavistic memory' or others call 'past-life experiences'. I happen to believe that 'who' and 'what' we are is hard-coded into us in our DnA. I also believe that some people know how to tap into that, and are not afraid or hesitant to do so. Some just naturally do it. This comes not only from reading and talking to others, but my own experiences with 'knowing' some things about myself I really had no way of knowing and only discovered when I started researching my family tree. There were some people, places and periods of history that I related heavily to and had no idea why. It began to become clear as I discovered who some of my ancestors were. Brennan has no clue whatsoever as to who he is: his genetic/racial/cultural makeup, or the circumstances under which he was born. Was he a child of love or a child of rape? He was left on the doorstep of a Catholic church as an infant with no clue whatsoever to his identity. Because of both his self-isolation and the nuns isolating him as a child, these memories weren't coated over in his forming personality as it would be if he had been in a family environment where he was being told his thoughts, visions and dreams were 'nonsense', 'silly', 'evil', or 'just his imagination' continuously. His burning desire to know who and what he is, may have caused these things to surface in his mind - or maybe they were already there. As children, many of us experience things like this, but because we are conditioned to think they are somehow bad or wrong for whatever reason, we bury them and learn to ignore them. Brennan never told anyone the content of the things he 'daydreamed' because he was a very closed-up child who felt rejected by everyone around him, including his own mother. THAT is what his story is about - about being able to confide in someone, to interact with and become comfortable with others. To that end, he takes a huge leap into a mix of professions where he HAS to interact with others, but on a more or less impersonal basis so he can ease into it. He wants to discover who he really is and not what he was told he is. That's all. As for the image, he's just sitting in the dark, looking at himself in the mirror after experimenting with red and black face paints...wearing red contacts...lost in his thoughts. He is, at heart, a 'show-person', an entertainer type...an artist. If there is anything 'sinister' in that, then I guess all true artists are ;) Not 'critisizing' or anything. I was just surprised by the assumptions made about his character and wanted to explain/elaborate on what is in my head about him because otherwise you'd have no way of knowing. ***** Thanks for stopping by my gallery dear friends! Have a great Wednesday! Ray Model is SRG_Brennan (WIP) Background by me

Tribal or Cultural Face Painting has been used for many motives. For hunting, religious reasons, and military reasons (mainly as a method of camouflaging) or to scare ones enemy. Several tribal fighting techniques were calculated to strike terror. Some warriors entered battle naked except for a loin cloth, but their bodies were streaked in bizarre examples in red and black paint. Decorating one's face in various patterns and shapes has been a part of the cultural make-up of many societies since the beginning of time. Face painting is a common theme across cultures as divergent as the Indigenous American tribes in North America and various tribes in Africa and South America. In Native American Tribes, Face Painting has been used for artistic expression since ancient times. The art of transforming ourselves with make-up and masks is a universal phenomenon. Before we sought to vent our artistic impulse on a cave wall, we painted on our faces and bodies. Indigenous peoples of the Amazon have said that in this power to change ourselves, we demonstrate our humanity and set ourselves apart from the world of the animals. http://www.face-painting-fun.com/cultural-face-painting.html And yes, there is a "Hidden Dragon". I'll post that tomorrow night.

Awesome image and great narrative.....I like the white face paint. Brennan is a fascinating character....I'm glad to know that there is nothing sinister about him....he's an artist who is trying to find his identity. It's sad that he doesn't know who he is, or anything about himself.....I hope that he'll eventually be able to find his true identity and have "peace of mind". Great job Ray....I look forward to seeing more of Brennan. I luv the title "Crouching Tiger", and I'm anxious to see your "Hidden Dragon" also! "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is one of my all time "fave" movies.....

A great charakter and the kick to change your face by using makeup I like very much. For which purpose it is, doesn't matter. I like this possibility to change the face in that what you like to have. There are so many ways like you pictured us and this image is one of them and it's great! Gr.Rudy.

  • It runs a Elke through the image, then after is only an empty chair ... LOL * He looks great, so mysterious, a little melancholy. You've created an amazing character! Bravo!

Thanks for the explanation. Darkness, red, a brooding look and stylized make up tend to stir up dark implications, thus the wrong assumption. Your description paints a more complex picture than previously realized. This follow up adds even more light. Great background and posing. I like the textures for the Euros outfit and his face paint looks great. Very interesting character indeed.

Well, I'm going through these 'backwards' so I saw the Hidden Dragon post first. But... this is equally amazing, Ray! This whole series is so well done, my friend! And your narrative is just as well done - and it definitely touches some chords here.... In many ways...
