Description

Zan’s Prehistoric World Narrative: Zan landed hard on the ground. He knelt for a few minutes until the sounds of shouting roused him to inspect his surroundings. He had landed in the middle of what appeared to be a war between two human tribes. Zan looked around and saw another Spirit shouting war cries. It was War Spirit. He was several years ahead of Zan in school and was known for being a bully towards the younger students. Zan watched as the attacking tribe ran through the defenders village knocking fish racks down and trampling drying food, perhaps corn, into the dirt. Zan felt a moment of euphoria as he realized that the attackers weren’t stealing anything, they were just destroying the defending humans food, supplies, tools, and anything else they could smash. This was glorious pure maliciousness. Zan watched as the attackers continued their wanton destruction. It was beautiful. War Spirit continued shouting battle cries and at first Zan thought the older boy was annoying but not really doing anything particular until Zan saw one of the attackers raise his spear and strike a defender to the ground. Zan jumped up and cried out, “NO!” That wasn’t an act of maliciousness, it was something else entirely. Zan realized that War Spirit intended to escalate this situation to a level far beyond maliciousness. The attacker that had struck the defender raised his spear and Zan saw that the human fully intended to drive his spear through the human on the ground. Zan looked around wildly for help. He saw another Spirit. Zan’s blood ran cold. He knew who that Spirit was. It was one of the oldest of the Spirits. It was the Death Spirit. ‘The Elder Council must have known this would happen,’ thought Zan. ‘That’s why Death is here.’ Zan would get no help from him. Zan turned and ran toward human lying helpless on the ground. As he ran he looked at his wrist control panel. It was only a student’s wrist implant with no real power like full grown Spirits were given, but Zan had an idea. His costume from the school play was still programmed into the device. Zan activated his costume, allowed himself to become visible to the attacking human and leaped in front of the spear. Zan bared his fangs at the human and roared. What the human saw was a demon on fire rise up out of the ground with fangs dripping burning venom. The warrior dropped his spear, turned and fled. Zan looked around at the battle. It didn’t appear as if any other humans had seen him. The battle wasn’t slowing down but instead was picking up as War Spirit worked the humans into a frenzy. Zan needed a new plan to stop this nightmare. Zan saw the leader of the attacking humans. That’s who he needed to stop. Zan ran towards the large warrior, stopped in front of him and allowed himself to be seen. Instead of roaring, Zan smiled, his fangs only slightly exposed, and said calmly, “Do you plan to kill them?” This warrior was startled but didn’t run. “Yes,” the warrior leader replied. “I will kill them all. What concern is it of yours, little demon?” Zan lifted a hand and poked the warriors arm a few times as if testing the meat. “This is my feasting ground; if you are going to kill them then I need a new hunting ground.” Zan explained. “Which way is your village?” Zan looked around as if trying to decide which way to go. The color in the warrior leader’s face drained, then he took a step back, turned and called out to his warriors. And just like that it was over. Zan saw the Death Spirit and the War Spirit striding toward him. The War Spirit was visibly furious.
