Mandi, it's getting late and I have to stop again. I'll be back for more, during this period of commenting, but I'll stop here with another of your 2D pieces. (I've been here 2 hours and unfortunately it's 3:30 a.m., so I have to get some sleep.) This is a delight. It's from July, but it has a Christmas-y tone in its reds and greens. But the portrayal is wonderfully playful, of a person all tied-in-knots with worry and fretting. ("Who struts and frets his hour upon the stage...") I wonder if you feel like this figure, right now, with a show coming up: If you didn't go through any insanity, that's great! Because most artists I know---esp in first shows of a style---are worse than this figure by the time the show opens. One artist said, "I felt like a cubist painting: I was in pieces and someone had to glue me back together to show up at my own opening..." But this was done way before any show. It's just a piece of your imagination, and a way of visualizing feelings and states. You've segmented this person the way you segment people in your historical pieces; only here you have only pen and marker to do it: simple and very funny. A bit harrowing too. She has almost a joker's headdress on, as in the King's or Queen's fool. Love the two hands beneath the face, crossed over each other with fingers splayed. And you combined thin ink lines with larger marker lines. Mostly line drawing, and you left plenty of white space...A fine cartoon, nudging its way into the frame in all its worry and convolution. It's great to see your physical art, Mandi. If I don't get here before your show, all the best on it! And I hope it leads to more outreach for your art, whatever form that takes. Yours is one of the most intelligent, serious, playful, boggling, syncretic, imaginative galleries here. And you show a lot of heart and passion through it all. All the best on Friday!
