Description
Captured 6/26/13, early AM, within three blocks of my awesome abode. Am fortunate to have the flower patch so close because I've found only one other patch of the species, which is about 2.5 miles away.
Hymenocallis liriosme (Raf.) Shinners
Spider Lily, Spring Spider Lily, Spring spiderlily
Liliaceae (Lily Family)
Synonyms: Hymenocallis eulae
Native to U.S.
An elegant and unusual-looking flower, the spider lily has a stem 1 to 3 feet high, with 2 or 3 blossoms at the top. The flower has 3 white sepals and 3 petals which are alike and unite to form a tube 2 to 4 inches long, narrow but spreading, and curving backward slightly as they age. The flowers are quite fragrant. The glossy leaves, at the base of the plant, are 6 to 30 inches long and 1 inch wide.

Wowee zoweee! These are absolutely stunning, my friend. I've never seen anything like these before, and you know of two places where they grow??? Lucky lucky you! Your shots are brilliant, the blossoms look almost like satin on that dark green foliage. What incredible beauty! You did amazingly well by them, kudos!

What an amazing flower! I like the way the stamen is a part of the petal like the spokes of an umbrella for a bit. Superb image! You have captured the delicate shading of the white petals in an outstanding way. I love the rich texture and translucency of the petals against the background of green. All the shots are gorgeous. I love seeing the orange flags of anthers in the first shot, and being able to trace the stamen and pistil from tip to center. Wonderful closeups in the next two shots. Beautiful captures!

I said I'd do this spider lily too, and here I am. As always, I resonate immediately with Denise's remarks, and as always with Lucinda's long and deep observations. (And a lot of other responses as well.) From an overview, these appear like bursts of white light. Because no matter how opaque they appear, they are so delicate and allow in light and shadow from behind enough, that they appear like thin silk or light itself. You captured both the silken feeling and the ephemeral (light) feeling equally well, here. Your sequence---from 4 to 2 to 1 (well done)---allows us to see them interact with each other (top), to seeing one alone as it bursts into space. I can't get over those spindly tentacles that come straight from the stamen center---like umbrella spokes (Lucinda): They end in green and then orange---what design! You've captured that strange way their columns bulge inside the main flower but don't "separate" from the main flower---until they 'leave' the main flower: Subtle bulges, shadows, etc, which are part of the difficulty of capturing these flowers, I assume. The deep green of your background is perfect foil for the flowers. And in the last shot, the white easily gives way to a translucent silken: Finely captured. I can see why these are a challenge; but it's a beautiful threesome, with real clarity of light and texture, and rich background too. Beautiful work.
