Description
This is actually a manned motorcar, even though powered by a tiny electric engine and a fuel cell. But it is able to travel more than 6000 kilometers with the equivalent of one liter of gasoline (the small one needs a little more). Who likes to calculate the miles per gallon? Driver is the smallest and most petite girl in the team. She even does a diet before competition each time as she is not allowed to weigh more than 50 kilograms which is the minimum payload.
Last night, we had a "Night of Science" in Dresden. Therefore, we were in need of an interesting object to present in the test section of our wind tunnel. A few weeks before I had seen these guys when they displayed their vehicle on the air-show in Schwarzheide/Schipkau. I asked them, whether they were interested in some experimental aerodynamics and later invited them to visit us for some show time.
They did come and already had a number ideas what to try when having the chance to put the vehicle into a wind tunnel. We applied some wool tuft and smoke for flow visualization, but there was not much to show - only at a certain yaw angle/crosswind, flow separation can be seen at the lee side. Although only optimized only by CFD, it seems almost perfect from the standpoint of aerodynamics.
Hopefully, we can do a number of serious projects together.
Tried to make some kind of collage this time. View full size please!
