It's not easy to go back to the period when it was built the Castle of Gaeta. It was probably built in the sixth century during the war of the Goths or in the seventh century when the maritime zones of Lazio and Campania were the subject of the expansionist ambitions of the Lombards. In the documents of that period begin to report Gaeta with the name of "Kastrum." Some news of the existence of the Castle of Gaeta have the time of Federico II di Svevia, who during the period of the struggle with the papacy, stayed on several occasions in Gaeta, and, sensing the strategic position, in 1223 you had it fortified the castle .
The structure that we admire today, about the size of 14,100 m², is called the Angioino-Aragonese Castle because it is made up of two connected buildings made in two different historical moments, one below called "Anjou", created during the French domination of the Angevins, and one higher called "Aragonese", built by Emperor Carlo V together with all the other works of military defense that went to strengthen the fortress of Gaeta.

It's a beautiful capture! Great comp. It's interesting how the old architecture mixed with modern in this view. The two cranes become an anachronism emerging from the castle.

ZOOM is a must here! That's a great shot, such amazing detail. I do see one little dust mark. You might be able to blow that off the sensor with a little canned air while holding the camera with the sensor facing down.
