Description
Zam’s Prehistoric World
Narrative:
Zam knew their father was watching them and all their darting from hiding spot to hiding spot wasn’t actually doing any good, but Zan seemed to enjoy it, and it was a fun game. Zam suddenly froze in place and held his arm up to stop his brother.
“What is it?” Zan whispered.
“Something here,” Zam replied lifting a hand and following an invisible line from one wall to the other.
“A security sensor?” Zan asked.
“Don’t know what that is.” Zam looked at his brother amused, “Can you eat it?”
“No, you illiterate cave boy,” Zan snapped, “It’s an alarm, a loud noise will sound.”
Zam hunched over and lifted his foot and stepped between the unseen sensors. The alarm didn’t go off, and Zan followed his brother past the alarm.
“How do you do that?” Zan asked, referring to Zam’s ability to sense unseen things.
In a control room above the generators, Fox and the Mission Director watched.
“How does he do that?” asked the Mission Director.
Fox shook his head sadly, “I’m afraid with our dependency on technology, we have lost much of our natural senses. Zam may be my son, but he was raised without technology in an extremely hostile environment, his senses are razor sharp.”
The Mission Director watched the monitor a moment longer then replied, “It’s a good thing for us he doesn’t intend to be a burglar; he could steal the socks off our feet without us even knowing.”
Fox laughed, “No fear of that, I’ve tried to get Zam to wear socks. It was a bit like trying to put socks on a snake; it just didn’t work.”
The Mission Director turned back to the monitor. “It’s time to end this, Fox,” he said.
“Alright, let’s go get them,” replied Fox.
Zam was following his brother through the narrow corridor, the generators were directly ahead; twenty-four generators that provided the energy output of a small sun. He looked up at the ceiling. His father wasn’t watching anymore. Zam melted into the shadows, leaving his brother to continue unaware on his own toward the generator.
Zan had just reached the generator, still unaware that his brother was no longer behind him.
“Hold it right there, young demon,” The Fox Sprit said as he and the Mission Director stepped out from behind the generator.
‘Whaa..? How? Thought Zan, his brother should have known their father had been there. He turned and discovered his brother had vanished. Zan’s eyes blazed for a moment and then went dull as he hung his head.
“Are you alone, son?” asked Fox.
“Yes father.” Zan said in a defeated tone.
“Let’s go then.” Fox said.
The Mission Director looked at Fox but got a barely perceptible nod. The confused Director said nothing and they turned and walked toward the exit with a thoroughly dejected Zan following behind them.
Zan had taken no more then ten steps when an arm reached out of the shadows and grabbed him. Zan turned his head to see his brother and before Zan could say anything, the room disappeared and Zan found himself falling in a trans-jump.
The Mission Director heard one of the generators spin up and the crackle of a T-Portal opening. He spun around in time to watch both boys disappear. Fox did not bother to turn around.
“I know,” said Fox. “It was really only a matter of how long it would take Zam to rescue his brother.”
“And you are just going to let them get away?” the Mission Director asked.
“Of course,” said Fox. “I’ve been trying to get Zam to take his brother camping for weeks, but he refused, and Zan refuses to go anyway. Zan is terrified to leave the mountain. Now they have done it on their own terms and will have a great adventure together
“You planned this whole thing?” asked the Mission Director incredulously.
“To be the father of two demon boys one must be very devious.” Fox grinned. “Let’s go get some dinner.”
