Description

The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia has an outstanding collection of totem poles, many of which are assembled in one mammoth room, a small corner of which is shown here. It also houses thousands of other types of anthropological objects from all over the world, though I have to admit that I found myself suffering from sensory overload as I did my best to see as much as I could in the short time we had there. You could easily spend many days there. From Wikipedia: "The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is renowned for its displays of world arts and cultures, in particular works by First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations . As well as being a major tourist destination, MOA is also a research and teaching museum, where UBC courses in art, anthropology, archaeology, conservation, and museum studies are given. MOA houses 38,000 ethnographic objects, as well as 535,000 archaeological objects in its building alone. This Museum includes a number of large sculptures, totem poles, and cultural artifacts. Although MOA's focus is on the First Nations of the Northwest Coast, the collection of 38,000 ethnological objects includes objects from all continents. These are mostly located in the Multiversity Galleries, where objects that would normally be stored behind the scenes are made accessible to the public. The collections include contemporary works as well as historical objects. In addition to the ethnographic collections, MOA houses an archaeological collection of approximately 535,000 pieces. These are managed by UBC's Laboratory of Archaeology. The Museum also has a small wing dedicated to European ceramic art works collected by the late Walter Koerner. The Koerner European Ceramics Gallery, which opened in 1990, contains over 600 European ceramics collected by Koerner, which he donated to the Museum in 1987." If you can't get to Vancouver, the museum has cataloged all 38,000 of it's ethnographic objects online in a very friendly & easily accessible way, cross-referenced across multiple categories. Photos are available of most of them, though apparently it's still a work in progress & some photos aren't available yet. Well worth checking out here. I'll post a few more of the photos I took during our visit...

It's been far too long since I was up there. I remember this as being a fascinating place, but there's never enough time. I like the variety of the carvings you chose here. Wonderful!

The HDR did wonders for bringing out the strong textures and the natural colors. I do like this modern trend in cultural museum to have lots of negative space rather than cramming in objects in every cubic meter.

An excellent link and 309 totem photos over there. This is a fantastic capture with the central totem framed by the foreground totem.
